Southern’s Stance on Sustainable Tourism ~ Join Southern

Sustainable Tourism

As travelers become more socially conscious and geared toward eco-friendly tourism, the phrase “sustainable tourism” pops up more and more. You may be wondering just what is “sustainable tourism?” The UN World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” Booking.com reports that 87% of travelers want to travel sustainably, while four out of 10 report that they often or always do. So, keeping that in mind, it’s important to us at Southern to ensure we are engaging in sustainable tourism!

In 2020, we’ve made moves to supply our properties with more eco-friendly amenities across the board. We will now be using Grab Green dishwashing tabs and dish soaps and a scrub sponge to replace the dish towel formerly found in our properties. As part of our Clean Coverlet Program, we replace your current comforters and quilts with environmentally-friendly bed covers that are changed and laundered with each reservation. We also install Smart Home technology in your property to help monitor heat and air conditioning, which in turn helps conserve energy.

However, sustainable tourism doesn’t just mean those few things. It also means we hire local staff and give back to our communities. We’re proud to staff our areas, from Panama City Beach to Gulf Shores & Fort Morgan, Alabama, with teams of locals who are proud to live and work at the beach. And, with our Southern Cares initiative, we support several non-profits and organizations as well as spend time volunteering within our local community. In addition, with the celebration of our 25th anniversary, we launched our Voluntourism Initiative, inviting guests to volunteer with a local organization on their vacation. We’re active in our communities and invite our guests to be as well!
